Creative sparks will fly at Anderson Farm Park

When Montgomery County’s Upper Providence Township decided to enhance the newly developed Anderson Farm Park, a multipurpose band shell seemed like a natural fit. So naturally, they looked to General Recreation and Cedar Forest Products for solutions.

Upper Providence Township had enjoyed their annual concert series under the shelter of a Cedar Forest Products pavilion shelter in years past. As the parks department sought to expand their programming to include an art and theatre camp for children, Recreation Director Sue Barker knew that an upgraded facility was in order—one that merged aesthetics with extra space for storage, dressing rooms and costume changes.

Having partnered with General Recreation on various projects over the last few years, Barker looked to them once more. “We trust them in everything they do,” says Barker. “They are always so professional; they follow up and guarantee their work. It’s high quality.”

The new red cedar band shell sits on an elevated concrete slab at the bottom of a gently sloped area of the park. The sloping hill acts as a terraced seating area offering everyone a great view.

The five-ply cedar laminated timber walls create a rustic feel in the park, while the striking burgundy colored metal roof lends a modern touch. The cedar walls and three-sided roof structure also help to project sound in the direction of the listeners. Finally, the installed electrical and lighting components rival any indoor facility in the area, while the structure’s two side rooms offer opportunities for storage and “backstage” activities.

Thanks to General Recreation and Cedar Forest Products, Anderson Farm Park will begin hosting concerts and other theatrical performances in the new band shell beginning in spring 2010.
