The York City Police Department recently celebrated the dedication of a brand-new pocket park at its King Street headquarters – a small but meaningful space designed to bring comfort, connection, and community. General Recreation, Inc., based in Newtown Square, PA, proudly partnered with the department to plan, supply, and install this thoughtful outdoor area.
Located on a former grassy patch beside the police headquarters, the new Outdoor Waiting Area/Pocket Park offers a safe and welcoming environment for families and visitors. It features a TopsyTurny Spinner, engaging interactive play panels, multiple seating areas, and a soft, rubberized play surface designed for comfort and safety. Cameras also monitor the space, giving both parents and police staff added peace of mind.
General Recreation’s Steve Hemler, Senior Sales/Market Development, collaborated closely with York City Police and community stakeholders throughout the design process. His team provided and installed all play equipment, safety surfacing, and shade structures, helping transform an ordinary lawn into a vibrant and purposeful play space.
“For years, our community has used this very spot as a court-ordered meeting place for custody exchanges and a safe area to meet and exchange goods,” shared York City Police Commissioner Michael Muldrow. “Loving parents have told their children to meet here after school, and victims and witnesses have come here to share their stories. We hope this new space offers a little refuge and a small slice of caring.”
The pocket park was made possible through a $40,000 Open Space Improvement Grant. Its goal is to provide a safe, supportive setting—and a positive distraction—for children who accompany their parents during police visits or investigations.
General Recreation is honored to have contributed to this community-focused project, demonstrating how thoughtful design and quality play equipment can help create spaces that foster trust, safety, and hope.
